Balance Training/Fall Prevention

We especially like working on balance with the elderly simply because it is a skill that many of us can keep and actually improve during our adult life.

Have you ever lost your footing on wet or icy pavement sending your heart into high gear?  If you have, then you know how frightening losing your balance can be. Ordinarily we take our balance for granted, but it is an important and vital part of our daily life.  As many as 28% to 45% of those over 62 fall each year.  Even though our balance will decline as we age, balance exercises and balance training can limit the loss or actually improve our performance.  At GLPT, it is our pleasure everyday to work with west Michigan seniors.  We especially like working on balance with the senior population because it is so rewarding to see the effects of improved balance on the quality of life for our patients.  Balance is skill that many of us can keep and improve well into our adult life.  Often we hear something like, “I wish I would have come here sooner.”

What our patients are saying...

After a knee replacement, I went to Great Lakes for therapy.  I’m just about done but will be coming back after my other knee replacement. Coming to Great Lakes is like coming home.  Everyone know you by name when you sit down next to someone they introduce you to each other, they listen when things come up and help you each step along the way and explain what you are feeling as you are going through the healing process.  I just love going there because it seems more like fun rather than work.
